This lot includes a fascinating historical letter written by "R Fulton" in pencil, which discusses the construction of a shed intended to house a machine and provide accommodation for a horse on one side. What makes this item particularly intriguing is the ink sketch on the reverse of the letter, which depicts the proposed structure. Accompanying the sketch are detailed notes and calculations written in ink. The letter measures 13 inches by 7.25 inches.

Additionally, the lot features an issue of the Portland Gazette and Maine Advertiser, dated October 8, 1810. This newspaper contains a front-page article that delves into the subject of Fulton's torpedoes, highlighting a dispute with Commodore Rodgers concerning torpedo defense strategies.

All items in this lot bear the hallmarks of age, such as foxing, creasing, edge wear, and yellowing, which are typical for documents of this vintage. These pieces are part of the esteemed Dr. John K. Lattimer collection, known for its historical significance and connection to notable figures and events.

Robert Fulton (November 14, 1765 – February 24, 1815) was an American engineer and inventor who is widely credited with developing the world's first commercially successful steamboat, the North River Steamboat (also known as Clermont). In 1807, that steamboat traveled on the Hudson River with passengers from New York City to Albany and back again, a round trip of 300 nautical miles (560 kilometers), in 62 hours. The success of his steamboat changed river traffic and trade on major American rivers.
