May 16th Rare Autograph Auction
Autograph letter signed ("P Curie") to an unidentified correspondent, Paris. 9 December 1890. In French. Two pages, 270 x 209mm (light toning, especially at margins and partly separated folds, pin holes). Curie writes that he has a relationship with M. Mirand (the Paris microscope makers), and discusses the difficulty involved in the construction of microscopes, noting that mastering their manufacture would require exclusive attention to the process.
Pierre Curie (15 May 1859 – 19 April 1906) was a French physicist, and a pioneer in crystallography, magnetism, piezoelectricity, and radioactivity. In 1903, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics with his wife, Marie Curie, and Henri Becquerel, "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint research on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel". With their win, the Curies became the first-ever married couple to win the Nobel Prize, launching the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes.
