This fascinating collection includes four historical documents, with the earliest dating back to 1789:

  1. Appointment by George Clinton (1789)
    A document signed by George Clinton, appointing Jacob S. Jackson as First Major of the Militia in Queens County, New York. The appointment was issued on September 30, 1789. Clinton instructs Jackson to take command of the regiment under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Carmen and to oversee the soldiers' training and discipline.
  2. Appointment by John C. Yates (1823)
    Dated May 27, 1823, this document appoints several individuals, including David R. F. Jones, Jacob S. Jackson, and others, as Wreckmasters for Queens County, New York.
  3. Appointment by DeWitt Clinton (1825)
    This document, dated January 29, 1825, appoints Oliver Hewlett, Daniel Mott, Thomas Hewlett, Micah Owen, Jacob S. Jackson, and others as Wreckmasters for Queens County, New York.
  4. Citizenship Document (1864)
    The collection also includes an 1864 citizenship document from New York.

Historical Figures:

  • George Clinton (1739–1812): A soldier and statesman, he served as the first governor of New York and later as vice president of the United States under both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
  • DeWitt Clinton (1769–1828): An influential politician and naturalist, DeWitt Clinton served as governor of New York and was instrumental in the construction of the Erie Canal.
  • Joseph C. Yates (1768–1837): The eighth governor of New York, serving from 1823 to 1824. He was a founding trustee of Union College and a significant figure in state politics.
