Double sided handwritten letter from Napoleon I (1769-1821) to Monsieur Otto, dated September 30, 1806, Mayence. The letter concerns a courier to Aracenau regarding General Mesle and communication with Italy during the Napoleonic Wars. The Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) were a series of global conflicts between the French Army and various European alliances. Letter in Full: Monsieur Otto, I am sending a courier to Aracenau to have news of General Mesle and of the state of affairs in that sector. I am ordering hirn to return via Munieh, and I want you to have everything you learn forwarded to me. My headquarters will be at Wurtzburg Tomorrow, and probably at Bamberg on October 5. ASK General Deroi about the location of each ('If his regiments on October 3, and their condition. I would like him to send it to me immediately by an officer of his general staff so that communication will be frequent. If the courrier has need of special instructions in order to proceed to Aracenau, you will furnish them to him. Write to the Viceroy of Italy via courier to give him news about what is happening. Dispell all the false rumors that are so frequent during war. write the Viceroy tc have news sent to Naples by Estafettes. Each time that there 18 disastrous news about or that you learn of important events, do not neglect to send couriers to Milan, and entrust discrete men with them, who won't do anything else except carry letter!'!. It is appropriate that - in order to advance yourself - you spread the rumor in the Aracenau area that everything has been arranged with Prussia.
