Union general (1815–1872), known as ‘Old Brains,’ who, despite his administrative skill as general-in-chief, failed to achieve an overall battle strategy for Union forces. Lincoln once described him as ‘little more than a first rate clerk.’ War-dated LS signed “H. W. Halleck,” one page, 4.75 x 7.75 Department of the Missouri letterhead, December 28th, 1861. Letter to Brig. General Franz Sigel in full:
"General Curtis is your commanding officer and is in command of the district. Your division will probably soon be reorganized and brought to this city. H.M. Halleck, Major General."In fine condition.
