13th president of the U.S. ALS as vice-president, from Albany, NY, dated April 1, 1849, and addressed to John H. Bryant, Esq. Friendly letter to office seeker. He can’t recommend him because “I was committed to an old friend Capt. Easby of Washington before I was aware that you were a candidate for the office of Commissioner of Public Buildings. I fear however that he stands little chance of success yet there would be an inconsistency in me should I ever recommend another.” He suggests an appointment in the Custom House. He doesn’t expect to visit Washington again this summer. 1 ½ pp 7 x 4 ½”.
