Signed book: Why England Slept. Later printing. NY: Wilfred Funk Inc., 1940. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8.25, 252 pages. Signed on the first free end page “John F. Kennedy.” In Fine condition, with light toning to signed page, a bit heavier toning and soiling to pastedowns and last free end page, scattered soiling and light rubbing and slight corner bend to one of the boards. Published the year Kennedy graduated from Harvard, Why England Slept was an expansion of his senior thesis. The title is a variant on the title of Winston Churchill’s work, While England Slept, published about two years before Kennedy’s. Kennedy’s work attempts to explain why England was so poorly prepared for World War II and why England’s leaders settled upon the disastrous policies of appeasement. The book served as a warning to those in our country who felt that appeasing Hitler and staying out of the war were viable options. It became a bestseller in the United States and went through several printings in its first year. An uncommon title and even more so, signed with a beautiful period signature of Kennedy.
