Vice-President under Jefferson and Madison. ALS, 3pp. from Poughkeepsie, 6th January 1805 to U. S. Senator John Smith. At the time, Clinton was Vice-President Elect and Governor of New York. This is a superb content letter. He discusses his upcoming trip to the inauguration, including his concerns about weather. He may go as far as New York in a sleigh, but wonders what next. He asks for advice so as to make his arrangements. He really doesn't think it important to be there on that date because the V.P. has no duties until the next meeting of the Senate. "I dread the jaunt." He also talks about Aaron Burr (referring to him as the little intriguer) and the machinations of his friends.
The letter also refers to the impeachment of Judge Chase (Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase, a signer from Maryland). The letter includes this profound line: "Members of Congress as you observe are pretty much like other men and consequently not exempted from human infirmities." IMPORTANT LETTER
