Distinguished American poet, foe of slavery,critic, first editor of The Atlantic Monthly, Harvard professor, essayist, Ambassador to Spain and to England. ADS Harv. Coll., Cambridge, 31st Aug. 1857. This is a poem that has to be one of the most charming responses ever to an autograph request.
"There is not one of all the Muses But, if you ask her aid, refuses, Nor one off all the triple Graces
That will not if provoked, make faces; And conscious autographs I know well Are nothing worth --
