VERY FINE. A DESIRABLE AND RARE CIVIL WAR NOTE AND BANK DRAFT SIGNED BY THOMAS J. "STONEWALL" JACKSON AS COLONEL “it has given me great satisfaction to see so much religious interest as I observed in the army of course it is far behind that seen in the civil life.”

This is an incredible piece, hand written and signed by Jackson, on July 5th, 1861, within months of being enlisted into the war by Virginia Governor John Letcher as a Colonel and where he would assemble and command the famous "Stonewall Brigade" at Harpers Ferry. Interesting enough he signed the Bank Draft portion as Colonel, although he had received the title of brigadier general on June 17. The Bank Draft which has been crossed through does reads: Darkesville Berkeley County Va. July 5th 1861, Bank of Rockbride Pay to the order of J.H. (?)Meges one hundred dollars. T.J. Jackson Col Below Jackson writes: Remember me very fondly to Dr. White & My other friends & your family, it has given me great satisfaction to see so much religious interest as I observed in the army of course it is far behind that seen in the civil life. I am much obliged to you and for your kindness. This unusual piece has both a signed bank draft and a note in one. The bank draft has hatch lines throughout but still, has a great look and the lines do not hamper the ability to read, with a very clear dark signature of Jackson and his rank. The note is interesting since he is commenting on religion in the army. Jackson was a very religious man, who believed that” his men should be, not only good soldiers of their country, but also good soldiers of the Cross.” Military historians consider Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history and his early death during the war was a major blow to the confederate side. A One Of A Kind Item!
