King James II of England (House of Stuart) Exceedingly rare signature written while king, "James R" .affixed below medallion portrait on B",i card stock. Reign (1685-88)steeped in controversy. Attempted to reinstate Roman Catholicism as official state religion. Lost support and confidence of his subjects. Fled England for France ca November 1688, where he enjoyed the hospitality of King Louis XIV. His self imposed exile was declared an abdication. and William and Mary ascended the throne. James died in St. Germains after spending several years in acts of ascetic devotion. Excellent condition.
