James J. Corbett Signature Signature: "Yours Truly /Jas J Corbett, Nov 3/92", 2" x 2" signed card. Boxer James J. Corbett became Heavyweight Champion of the World on September 7, 1892, when he knocked out champ John L. Sullivan in the 21st round of a fight held in New Orleans. He held his title until March 17, 1897 when he was knocked out by Bob Fitzsimmons in the 14th round of a bout held in Carson City, Nevada.
