(1789 - 1851) American novelist. When challenged by his wife to write, he created the classics The Last of the Mohicans and The Deerslayer. Fine and rare A.M.Q.S. 1p. sm. 8vo., Paris, Mar. 21, 1833, a quote from chapter 16 of his work The Headsman penned for a Miss Grant.

In full: "Silenus rolled from his ass, to the great delight of a thousand shouting boys, and to the infinite scandal of the prisoners; the latter affirming to a man, that there was no acting in the case, but that the demi-god was shamefully under the influence of too many potations swallowed in his honor. J. Fenimore Cooper for Miss...Grant Paris March 21st, 1833".

In The Headsman, Silenus, foster father to Dionysos, was the son of Hermes (or Pan). Perpetually drunk, he is closely associated with Dionysos and rode a donkey ("ass") in all bacchanal processions.

Very slight thinning to corners, otherwise near fine.
