ALS, one page, 8 x 10, Washington March 6, 1849. Letter of introduction to Persifor F. Smith, in California sending a son of one of Buchanan’s close friends who was a soldier who fought in Mexico and now going To California. Letter in full: Permit me to introduce to you the bearer hereof Mr. William J Ankrim who is about to proceed to California. Mr Ankinson is the son of an old & Valued friend and ahs served his country gallantly in Mexico as a Lieutenant. From the information I received, I entertain a high opinion of his character and therefore cheerfully Commend him to your regard. From Your friend very Respectively. James Buchanan.William J. Ankrin went to California as Captain as part of the Pittsburgh and California Enterprise Company which after arriving to California where transferred to Indian Territory. Ankrim became a prominent soldier in the California territory and financially did well. Persifor Frazer Smith (November 16, 1798 – May 17, 1858) was a U.S. Army officer during the Seminole Wars and Mexican-American War, as well as one of the last military governors of California before it became a US state. Framed in Matted in fine condition.
