MADISON, JAMES & DOLLEY et al. A unique Madison collection. Included is a bank check in Dolley's hand signed by James Madison. The check is payable to James M.Cutts for $8.75, drawn on Branch Bank of the United States at Washington and dated May 15, 1835. There is also a free frank signed by Dolley as "Free D P. Madison". Both the check and the free frank are pasted on the back of a letter from J. Madison Cutts to President Harrison dated Thanksgiving day, Nov. 29 '88. He is enclosing a 15-page magazine article entitled "The Family of James Madison" (with some notes by Cutts) and another article about Dolley's saving the Stuart portrait of Washington~The letter says in part "presented with kind and affectionate regard to the Centennial President of the United States, Genl Benjamin Harrison and his beloved wife by their friend and relative." (This may be Cutts' retained copy of the letter.) A pencil note signed by Cutts below the check says "Enclosed by my aunt to my father to execute a private commission. J. M. Cutts". The recipient of the check was Dolley's nephew, son of her sister Anna Payne. The writer of this material would therefore be Dolley's great-nephew.
