This is a remarkable signed letter by Jefferson Davis in which he writes to a John Berrien Lindsley. Lindsley was doctor, scientist and author. The letter is a fascinating argument that Davis felt was the right for the states to have the right for self-government and their rights to secede from the union. Two handrwitten and signed letters one signed “Jefferson Davis,”  one page both sides, 5 x 8, March 11,1887.The other is a 4 "x5" signed Letter, marked, "Private" with just his initials JD. Both accompoanied With JSA Full letter LOA.

Please note: We do believe there is a possibility that the the full letter is written by eithier Jefferson Davis's wife, Varina Davis who on some occasions acted as his secretary, or Jefferson Davis, although it does have JSA saying they both letters are in Davis's hand.

J Berrnien Lindsley M.D.

The work is to me rendered dear as another one of the offerings made by a woman of the South.

For such it became when the Southern States alone contended for the freedom and independence which the constitution was formed alone to secure & preserve. Please give my cordial thanks to Mrs. Lindsay, the sister of a hero in the war between the states, and daughter of a comrade in arms of the immortal Jackson. I trust the example have set will be followed by other States for the commemoration of Patriots who dared all for Sates Rights and Self Government. The Principle heritage which deserved to us from our Fathers of the Revolution.

Respectively & Truly Yours

Jefferson Davis

2nd signed letter marked Private.

Private

It is a lingual solecism to term the resistance of states to coercion a rebellion subjects, not sovereign may “rebel” and the states won their sovereignty in the war of 1776. It is politically inaccurate to the term ours a “civil war” which properly applies to a near between factions of one politics, where as ours was a war between the States United by a Federal (?) for enumerated purposes & therefore it was a war between states which united by consent separated in the exercise of their reserved sovereignty.
