ILYA TOLSTOY (1866-1933) Russian Writer, the son of Leo Tolstoy. Vintage signed 13 x 17 photograph, the printed paper image depicting Leo Tolstoy seated in a three quarter length pose, signed by Ilya Tolstoy in ink to the lower photographer's mount, with an additional quotation in his hand, in English, 'There is no God for him who can not find Him within himself'. The image is lightly affixed at the upper edge to the mount and has a large, although neat, tear at the head. Tolstoy's writing, and particularly his signature, are somewhat light, although legible. Ilya Tolstoy has chosen a quotation from his father's Leo Tolstoy's work The Pathway of Life (1919), a collection of sayings of varied authorship, having been gathered from Brahminical, Confucian and Buddhist sources, from the ancient and modern. Tolstoy retold them in his own language, arranging them under suitable captions, and interspersing them with the expressions of his own attitude to the problems of life.
