Rare and historically important 1783 original copper plate printed fabric titled “America Presenting at the altar of Liberty”. Featured in Smithsonian curator Herbert Collins” monumental work “Threads of History”. Features a large portrait of General George Washington at upper left. To the right is Lady Liberty holding a large medallion of portraits of Washington and Benjamin Franklin. She sits atop an altar base which reads, “America Presenting at the Altar of Liberty Medallions of her Illustrious Sons”. The Sons of Liberty depict the image background with famous historical figures John Adams, John Jay, Robert Morris and Samuel Huntington. Adorned in red and beige, textile appears to be a Revolutionary War adaptation of ancient Greek art and was identified as number six in “Threads of History”. Measuring 30.5”x22.75”, with eight rings on reverse for hanging. Small tears near Washington’s knee, arm and face, light staining near one portrait and at altar base and minor wear at perimeters.
