Signed First Day Cover (envelope) with four stamps and hand stamp commemorating American composer Victor Herbert, signed by five of the greatest American songwriters of all time. Postmarked New York, May 13, 1940. Sent with the signature of the NYC postmaster, Albert Goldman, and typed address to Albert A. Kapp, New York. Across the typed address, signatures of Berlin, Porter, Kern, Dietz and Harbach in ink. Envelope measures 4.25 x 9.5 inches (10.6 x 24.2 cm). Envelope opened and partly resealed after insertion of a piece of cardboard; browned and frayed to upper edge, else fine. Truly one of the most incredible autograph groupings we have encountered.
A unique item with an unusual combination of signatures from the greats of Broadway and/or Tin Pan Alley. Albert Goldman is notable for being the first Jewish postmaster of New York City. He held the position from 1935 to 1952.
