8° (182 x 122 mm). 9 illustrations by Henry Holiday; mounted albumen carte-de-visite print by Arthur Debenham of Gertrude Chataway (the dedicatee) on title-page verso. (Some scattered pale spotting.) Original red pictorial gilt cloth, spine gilt-lettered, g.e., ticket of Burn & Co. on rear pastedown (rear hinge cracked, wear at extremities, repairs at ends of spine panel); green quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: sold Sotheby's London 17 December 1898, lot 144; Lawrence Doyle, Esq., Dublin; Robert P. Esty (his sale, sold Parke-Bernet, 22 October 1963, lot 28).
The photograph of Gertrude Chataway, the dedicatee of the poem, was taken by Isle of Wight photographer Arthur Debenham with Dodgson's assistance. It appears in several inscribed copies. Dodgson ordered from the Macmillan bindery on 21 March 1876 one hundred copies of TIre Hunting of the Snark to be specially bound in "red and gold," and then went down to London eight days later to inscribe 80 copies as gifts. He presumably took this copy for himself at that time, and signed and dated it. Edward Wakeling notes that "The initials CLD indicate that this was Dodgson's own personal copy." Edward Wakeling, is editor of the Lewis Carroll Diaries.
