TLS signed “Charles A. Lindbergh,” one page, 8.5 x 11, August 13, 1953.

This typed letter, signed by aviation pioneer Charles A. Lindbergh, was addressed to historian North Callahan. Written from Germany, the letter discusses Lindbergh's genealogical connection to the Loyalist Robert Land and his son John Land, detailing their roles in the Revolutionary War and subsequent migration to Canada. Lindbergh recounts family anecdotes, including near-escapes, reported deaths, and resettlement stories tied to John Land's life, offering insights into early American and Canadian history.

In the letter, Lindbergh expresses interest in Callahan's forthcoming book and shares a personal connection to Admiral Emory Scott Land, a distinguished World War II maritime leader and a fellow descendant of Robert Land. The document includes Lindbergh’s original signature and personal address in Darien, Connecticut, making it a valuable artifact for collectors of aviation history, Revolutionary War genealogy, or notable correspondence.

In full:

"Dear Mr. Callahan:

I regret the lateness of this reply to your April 11th letter. I have been travelling almost constantly in recent weeks, and am far behind with correspondence.

My mother's father, Dr. Charles H. Land, was a descendant of Robert Land. I am under the impression, however, that it was John Land, not his father (Robert) who fought on the Loyalist side of the Revolutionary War and fled to Canada. The old Land home still stands on the banks of the Delaware.

As you undoubtedly know, a number of accounts have been written about John Land and his part in the revolution—his near-escape from capture in a swamp when his companion was wounded, and he hit by a revolutionary bullet; (John's powder horn is reported to have stopped the bullet.); the report John received to the effect that his wife and family had been massacred by Indians; the report his wife received to the effect that John had been killed in the war; his settling so close to Niagara Falls that he complained of the roar in his ears; the reunion of the family after his wife heard of a John Land living in Canada; the move to the present site of Hamilton, where John was one of the first two settlers; etc. I can furnish references to some of the sources of Robert and John Land data if this would be of assistance to you.

Please let me know when your book is published. I would like to order a copy.

Sincerely,

Charles A. Lindbergh"
