TLS as governor of New York, of one of the U.S. Supreme Court's most outstanding chief justices. He also served as U.S. Secretary of State and as the Republican nominee, lost the 1916 presidential election to Wilson by a narrow margin. Hughes acknowledges the writer's suggestion for an "appointment to the Supreme Court bench".
