Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, Appointment Signed "Cornwallis." One vellum page, 17" x 9.75" (sight), [London], June 11, 1771, granting to "Richard Rutson the office or clerkship of Clerk of the Peace of the said Liberty of the Tower of London and the precincts thereof." Binding holes are found all along the left and right edges. Folds are stained. Matted with a full transcription of the document and an engraved portrait of Lord Cornwallis to an overall size of 35.25" x 21.25". It was under the command of Cornwallis that the British Army surrendered to Washington at Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. After returning to England, he was later appointed governor-general and commander-in-chief of India in 1789. His service in India did much to restore his reputation and he was awarded the title of Marquis in 1792. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
