A fine ALS by Bushrod Washington from Mount Vernon in 1805...apologizing for not getting in touch sooner about a sale purchase of corn. Bushrod Washington, like his uncle George Washington before him, grew corn at Mount Vernon. When Bushrod inherited the Mount Vernon plantation in 1802 after George Washington's death, he continued the agricultural practices established on the estate, including growing corn.

Corn was an essential crop at Mount Vernon, used as a staple food for enslaved workers and livestock and occasionally sold for profit. George Washington had shifted Mount Vernon from a tobacco-based economy to diversified farming, with corn and wheat as primary crops.

Mount Vernon, June 15, 1805

Sir,

The difficulty which I supposed had set aside a contract I had made for corn at the time I wrote to you was afterward removed, by which means the necessity of making a further purchase was avoided. I fully intended to call to give you this information before I left town, but in the hurry produced by having a number of little commissions to execute, it entirely escaped me. I hope the delay has not been inconvenient to you.

I am very respectfully,
Sir, Yr. Mo. Ob. Servt.
Bush. Washington

Bushrod Washington (June 5, 1762 – November 26, 1829) was an American attorney and politician who served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1798 to 1829. On the Supreme Court, he was a staunch ally of Chief Justice John Marshall. Washington was a co-founder and president of the American Colonization Society, which promoted the emigration of formerly enslaved people to Africa. The nephew of American Founding Father and President George Washington, he inherited his uncle's papers and Mount Vernon, taking possession in 1802 after the death of Martha Washington, his uncle's widow, and with Marshall's help, published a biography of the first president.
