A Scarce Hawaiian Appointment by President James Buchanan
1) This is an appointment to the Consul of Hawaii in Honolulu by President Buchanan for a John A Parker of Virginia, dated October 2, 1860. The document is framed with nice large bold signature of Buchanan, some fold lines, toning and a couple small repairs on back, otherwise a nice looking document and rare to find any Hawaiian documents from this period.
2) Multiple signatures of Queen Liliuokalani , one tastefully framed with color photo of the Queen and sheet music, Aloha OE. Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian islands (1838–1917) who actively pursued the preservation of the islands for their native residents. In 1898, Liliuokalani was forced to give up her throne when Hawaii was annexed to the United States. Liliuokalani is a very rare autograph, especially as princess regent.
3) A scarce CDV photo of Queen Emma i (January 2, 1836 – April 25, 1885) was queen consort of King Kamehameha IV from 1856 to his death in 1863. She ran for ruling monarch against King Kalakaua but was defeated. This photo was taken in 1865 when Queen Emma visited England and Queen Victoria. 4) Uncommon Hawaiian Newspapers form Honolulu. Ka Elele Poakolu. (Honolulu) 1880-1881.This was short lived paper that lasted a little more than 1 year and on a few dates produced both a paper in Hawaiian and English language. This set of both papers was printed on October 13th, 1880.
5) 2 autographs of Lieutenant General John McAllister Schofield, American soldier who held major commands during the American Civil War. He later served as U.S. Secretary of War and Commanding General of the United States Army. He had been sent to Hawaii in 1872 and had recommended the establishment of a naval base at Pearl Harbor.
6) William Francis Quinn signature as the first Governor (1959-1962) of Hawaii, he was also Governor of the Territory of Hawaii, from 1957 to 1959. Originally appointed to the office by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Quinn was the last executive of an era of Republican rule over the Hawaiian Islands which began during the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
7) Sanford B. Dole first president of the Republic of Hawaii (1844–1926). Signed card "S. F. Dole”. Dole (April 23, 1844 – June 9, 1926) was a lawyer and jurist in the Hawaiian Islands as a kingdom, protectorate, republic and territory.
8) Joseph Boyd Poindexter (April 14, 1869 – December 3, 1951) was the eighth Territorial Governor of Hawaii and served from 1934 to 1942. Signed card “ Joseph Boyd Poindexter , Governor of Hawaii Honolulu, Aug.21.1936”
