This letter, dated January 4, 1802, is from Albert Gallatin, who was the Secretary of the Treasury under President Thomas Jefferson. The letter addresses an inquiry or issue raised by R.W. Hare, possibly related to the verification of certificates of deposit for public debt, as part of Treasury records.

Treasury Department
January 4th, 1802

Sir,

Your letter of the 17th ult. was duly received & attended to.

It appears that the greater part of the certificates, on which information is wanted, were on the books of the commissioner of loans, and he will be directed to make the investigation & grant you an official certificate of the result.

Some delay has occurred on account of the list sent by you not agreeing with that transmitted some time ago by Mr. Boyer, now with the Treasury books. You have in your list No. 2458, dated Oct. 8th, 1791, signed S. Hoarse for Dr. 4,834, 3. No such certificate appears on the Treasury books, where, if your description was correct, it must necessarily appear.

Perhaps the mistake is in the figures of the number which should be 2454 instead of 2458.

Permit me to suggest that the best mode of obtaining complete information would be to transmit a copy of the receipt given by the President of the Bank for the certificates deposited, which would enable the Treasury to give you an official certificate of the precise date or dates when each of the desired certificates was for the first time transferred after the date of the deposit. Such a certificate would, I presume, embrace the whole subject & the conclusive evidence, if any further be wanted in such case, of the reality of the deposit.

I have the honor to be, with perfect consideration,
Sir,
Your obdt. Servt.
Albert Gallatin

I enclose the certificate of the Register for the four certificates stated in your list which are found on the Treasury books.

Mr. R.W. Hare
