Lincoln, Abraham: Shortly after the outset of the Civil War, Lincoln, in May of 1861, appointed Thomas A. Scott a colonel of militia. Scott was an interesting. secretive and successful businessman, especially in railroading; and Lincoln and his Union forces needed Scott's expertise in transportation logistics. Scott rose to the occasion and in August Lincoln named him Assistant Secretary of War. After the war Scott continued his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad which became the largest publicly-traded corporation in the world. Signed Document is 17x10 with fine dark signature; also signed by Secretary of War Simon Cameron. Ink blot below Cameron's signature.
