Civil War-dated partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.25 x 19.5, March 1, 1865. President Lincoln appoints Monroe Hall as “Assistant Pay Master” Signed at the conclusion by Abraham Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton . The embossed blue War Office seal remains affixed to the upper left. In good condition, with overall wrinkling and rippling, a light stain to the masthead, and all of the handwritten portions (including both signatures) faded but legible.
Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the Union through the American Civil War to defend the nation as a constitutional union and succeeded in defeating the insurgent Confederacy, abolishing slavery, expanding the power of the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy.
