19TH CENTURY ENGLISH / GERMAN AUTHORS / SCULPTURE AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, comprising Christian Daniel Rauch (1772-1857), William Cobbett (1763-1835), Samuel Rogers (1763-1855), George Payne Rainsford James (1799-1860), Henry Hallam (1777-1859), and Baron Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-1885). Together with an unidentified example signed "S. Salisbury". Seven pieces total. Dated 1819 to 1851. 9 7/8" x 8" OA.

Document 1:

An original letter dated October 13, 1840, by Christian Daniel Rauch, one of the foremost sculptors of the 19th century and a central figure in the neoclassical movement. Addressed to Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm, the letter offers a rare insight into Rauch’s intellectual exchanges and personal relationships during his time in Paris, a critical period in his career. Written with warmth and signed with "Christian friendship," this document exemplifies Rauch’s thoughtful engagement with the artistic and cultural ideas of his era.

Document 2:

A letter dated January 8, 1831, from E. Salisbury to Madame Curtis offers New Year’s wishes and presents a portfolio as a token of respect. Written from the historic Hotel Montmorency, it reflects early 19th-century social customs.

Documents 3:

An undated correspondence from R. M. Milnes invites the recipient, humorously addressed as a "Martyr of literature & indigestion," to visit between 11 and 12. A typed version of the same letter is included, suggesting its formalization for record-keeping or publication.

Document 4:

A letter dated February 5, 1844, from Henry Hallam invites the recipient to breakfast to meet historian and politician Thomas Babington Macaulay. This document highlights the importance of informal gatherings in fostering 19th-century intellectual connections.

Document 5:

A letter dated December 15, 1857, from J. T. Headley acknowledges Washington Irving’s influence on his career and references his work, A Life of Presidentiales. Addressed to George R. Graham, a prominent publisher, this letter offers insights into Irving’s literary legacy.

Document 6:

A letter dated May 18 from Samuel Rogers expresses thanks for a manuscript and extends an invitation to breakfast with John Whishaw and Henry Hallam at his residence on St. James’s Place. This document offers a glimpse into Rogers’s renowned literary salons.

Document 7:

A business letter dated February 24, 1819, by William Cobbett discusses printing and advertisement bills and mentions colleagues Mr. Barbow and Mr. Gilley. It reflects Cobbett’s meticulous management of reformist publications and his involvement in the publishing industry.
